If you were among the Verizon customers who experienced service disruptions on Wednesday, there's some relief coming your way: the company is offering a $20 account credit to affected users.
The outage began around 12:30 PM Eastern time and lasted approximately 10 hours, leaving many customers' phones stuck in "SOS mode" with no ability to make calls, send texts, or use mobile data. At its peak, over 178,000 customers were affected across the country, with major cities like New York, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Houston hit hardest.
Verizon has confirmed the disruption was caused by a software issue and is conducting a full review of what happened. In a statement Thursday, the company acknowledged it "did not meet the standard of excellence" customers expect and announced the $20 credit, which it says covers multiple days of service on average.
Most affected customers can redeem the credit by logging into the myVerizon app—you should receive a text when it's available. Business customers will be contacted directly.
While Verizon admits the credit "isn't meant to make up for what happened," it's the company's way of acknowledging the frustration and inconvenience caused by Wednesday's outage.
