Spooky season is here and if you're looking to catch up (or re-visit) some classic horror films this October, let's rewind back to 1925! Before Mary Shelley's Frankenstein! Before Bram Stoker's Dracula there was Universal's adaptation of Gaston Leroux's now classic novel, "Phantom Of The Opera! (which was released 15 years before this film adaptation in 1910). There was no such thing as a "horror genre" in 1925, but this would be Universal's first attempt at a so-called, "horror film".
The production was a disaster to say the least and the film would end up with FIVE different cuts! The most popular is the 1929 re-issue which is 13 minutes less than the original 1925 cut. They even tried to film this to sound (as in 1929 silent films were transitioning to sound) but since Lon Chaney refused to participate, it never happened.
There was a lot of drama not only during production but also the release & re-releases! The now iconic film was almost a complete disaster! Thanks to Lon Chaney's iconic & timeless performance and make-up along with the cool sets, the film's legacy lives on!'
