I was just shy of 20 years old when Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" came to cinema's 25 years ago!
At this point, I hadn't seen a martial arts film. I've never seen a film starring Chow Yun-fat OR Michelle Yeoh! I've seen some cinema from around the world, but not a heck of a lot. Filmmaker, Ang Lee had been around for nearly a decade before this and despite the fact that this film had potential to be an international hit, it was an even BIGGER success than could've been imagined! Not only did it become the first non-English language film to break the $100 million mark in the USA, but it won tons of awards, a video game, a comic book series and a Taiwanese TV series!
The film is still watchable 25 years later and really went further in deepening the awareness and interest of Asian cinema & culture! It was in my top 10 films from the year 2000 for sure and it continues to be an easy go-to watch for Nicole & I.
