R.I.P. Robert Redford 1936-2025

We lost Robert Redford at the age of 89. What an incredible life! Unforgettable performances, films, his creating the Sundance Institute (which he funded from his success with acting) and finding The Sundance Film Festival & Sundance Productions! We could bring up his award nominated performance in "The Sting", his unforgettable turn in "Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid", "Jeremiah Johnson", etc.

I wanted to choose some of his more overlooked films and picked a few of his directorial efforts as well:

"War Hunt" (1962): A Korean war film and one of Redford's earliest film roles and the reason why this lesser seen film is best remembered was because of Redford. It's a great film and deserves to be seen more. Not the happiest of films for sure, but it sure is incredible!

"The Chase" (1966): An Interesting early drama co-starring Redford alongside Marlon Brando and Jane Fonda (One of five movies she would appear in with Redford).  The film deals with a prison break, vigilante justice, etc. The film drags on way too long, but it's interesting to see future star, Robert Redford take a back seat (even though he plays a major character) to Brando.

"All The President's Men" (1976): Whether you believe in the political turmoil of Watergate or not, there's no denying that this political thriller is one of the best written and executed political thrillers. Also, one of Redford's most unforgettable performances and it's great to see him shine! This was made from Wildwood Enterprises which was co-founded by Redford! Redford also purchased film rights to Woodward and Bernstein's book in 1974! The rest as they say, is history!

"Ordinary People" (1980): This was Redford's award winning debut as director! What a powerful film about a wealthy family falling apart after the accidental death of one son and an attempted suicide from the other! The film became financial and critical success and would lead into further noted directorial efforts including "A River Runs Through It", Quiz Show", "The Horse Whisperer", etc.

"The Old Man And The Gun" (2018): A late & entertaining film with Redford playing a role that fits him comfortably like a glove. Not entirely a successful film, but Redford's still charismatic performance helps lift the predictable film through it's less than stellar moments. Wort watching if you're a Redford fan!
