I personally think its WAY too early to be posting best of lists for this century! After all we're only 25 years in, but since I love discussing cinema, I figured I'd throw in some gems from the past 25 years that may be worth your time! If you'd like to see the list that sparked this (and many other on-line discussions), then click here!
I don't think I would've voted for "Parasite" as the top film of the past 25 years, although I can't say I'm that unhappy with the decision!
The thing I like about these lists is that some of these films are familiar to many, there are some that people may haven't heard of and perhaps they will discover them!
Here are my picks for the best films of the 25 years (in order by year)
In The Mood For Love (2000) (This actually made the NY Times top ten!) If you'd like to hear me discuss this film (along with other films from the year 2000), then click here!
Mulholland Drive (2001) (This was number 2 on the NY Times List) Unforgettable masterpiece from the late, great David Lynch! Just watch & experience it and try not to figure it out! One of the few films that I can't 100% figure out and I don't want to! If you'd like to hear us discuss this film (and David Lynch cinema), then click here!
Oldboy (2003) (43 on the list) This is one controversial & disturbing film, yet it's incredible and rewatchable (perhaps I'm twisted!) If you'd like to hear our discussion of this controversial classic, then click here!
It was great seeing a couple of Scorsese masterpieces on this list: "The Departed" & "The Wolf Of Wall Street"! I would seek out his entire filmography in the past 25 years:
"Gangs Of New York" 2002
"The Aviator" 2004
"Shine A Light" 2008 (Rolling Stones Documentary)
"Shutter Island" 2010
"Hugo" 2011
"Silence" 2016
"The Irishman" 2019
"Killers Of The Flower Moon" 2023
I was pleasantly surprised to see an Agnes Varda film on there: "The Gleaners & I" 2000 No filmmaker has ever made a documentary quite like Varda!
